Computational Bio Research Project
Explore the world of student research through 7EDU's Computational Biology Project on the topic "The Genetics of Superheroes: Could CRISPR Create Real-Life Powers?"
Class Time :
October 6 - December 17, 2025 | Monday and Wednesday | 6:00-8:00PM PST
(No class on 11/24-11/30)
Grade Level :
G9-11
Research Topics : The Genetics of Superheroes: Could CRISPR Create Real-Life Powers?
Students explore genetic bases behind extraordinary traits (strength, speed, healing) by identifying and analyzing real human genes related to these abilities. This 10-week summer program offers students hands-on research in computational biology that blends pop culture with real genetics, CRISPR technology, and ethical discussions, making complex science both relatable and exciting.
Tentatively Schedule:
Week 1-2: Literature review on human "superpower" genes (e.g., ACTN3 for muscle performance, LRP5 for bone strength).
Week 3-4: Identify candidate genes using databases like OMIM and ClinVar.
Week 5-6: Use CRISPOR or Benchling to design theoretical CRISPR edits.
Week 7-8: Evaluate feasibility, efficiency, and ethics of edits computationally.
Week 9-10: Write a fun yet rigorous manuscript summarizing possibilities and limitations.
