Top 10 Bay Area High Schools' SAT and ACT Scores

As we have written several articles on the SAT and the ACT test examinations recently, we thought it would be a good read for today to discuss early preparation.


If you are a student with the objective of attending one of the prestigious Ivy League schools or a top competitive university, it is highly encouraged that you prepare and develop the right skills and experiences early on in the game.


If you have not yet read our blog yesterday, go ahead and give it a read to learn about the extracurriculars that Ivy League schools love to see on applications!


With that said, how rapidly and ahead of time should you be looking at?


As early as you want! But for the sake of today's blog post, we will be looking at early planning in high school.


More specifically, let us take a look and think about what kind of school you should be attending as a high school student. As there are thousands upon thousands of options of academic schools to choose from, we will focus on the 10 top Bay Area high schools.



Silicon Valley, home to some of the greatest geniuses and most innovative technology, is a wonderful area for families to reside in. The community is nestled in the Bay Area, with immense opportunities for parents and students alike.


Finding the right academic environment for your children can be a complicated task when there are so many various factors parents must consider when enrolling their child. But fear not, today's 7EDU article will educate and guide families on Bay Area's renowned high schools.


What type of high school courses should you be taking in high school? What are colleges looking for in terms of your high school AP and Honors coursework? Read our previous blog here.


While on the search for suitable high schools that you can attend as a student, this blog post will provide further insight on several aspects one should look for when deciding on what high school they should enroll in.


Keep on reading for the detailed information on the top 10 San Francisco-Bay Area high schools!


#1. Henry M. Gunn High School


Located in Palo Alto, Henry M. Gunn High Schools ranks supreme as number one in California for public high schools.


With 1,896 students from grades nine-twelve, Henry M. Gunn High School is a part of the Palo Alto Unified School District.


The school has a 16:1 student-teacher ratio. According to their state test scores, seventy-two percent of students are at least qualified and proficient in math and eighty-two percent in reading.


The average SAT score for students that attend this top Bay Area high school is 1410, based on 541 responses collected. As for the ACT examination, the average student score is 32 (based on 336 responses).


Advanced-placement enrollment for Henry M. Gunn High School is at forty-two percent and as reported by a polling survey, ninety-one percent of students and parents believe that students at Henry M. Gunn High School are competitive (according to forty-five respondents).

#2. Saratoga High School


Located in Saratoga, Saratoga High School has 1,341 students in grades nine-twelve. They are a part of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District.


The student-teacher ratio is 19:1 and as reported by their state test scores, eighty-three percent of students are at least proficient in math and eighty-six percent in reading.


Students that attend Saratoga High School have an average SAT examination score of 1420 (based off of 274 responses) and an average ACT test score of 32 (based off of 142 responses).


Enrollment in advanced-placement for Saratoga High School is at forty-six percent and ninety-two percent of students and parents find the high school competitive (according to 25 respondents).

#3. Palo Alto High School


Located in Palo Alto, Palo Alto High School is the third-rank for top Bay Area high schools with 1,992 students enrolled.


The school has a student-teacher ratio 16:1 and according to their state test scores, Palo Alto High School has seventy-two percent of their students who are at least proficient in math and eighty-seven percent in reading.


Palo Alto High School is a part of the Palo Alto Unified School District and advanced-placement course enrollment is at forty percent.


High school students that attend Palo Alto High School have a median SAT exam score of 1370 and a median ACT test score of 31 - according to 670 responses for the SAT and 319 responses for the ACT.

#4. Los Altos High School


Fourth in line for top-rated, public schools located in the Bay Area is Los Altos High School. It has 2,088 students and a student-teacher ratio of 20:1.


As recorded in their state test results, seventy percent of students are at least proficient in math and eighty-two percent in reading.


They are a part of the Mountain View-Los Altos High School District and students are enrolled in advanced-placement classes at forty-two percent.


Median SAT test scores are at 1340 and average ACT exam scores at 31 - based on 466 respondents for the SAT and 224 for the ACT.

#5. Lowell High School


In San Francisco, you can find Lowell High School.


Prestigious individuals that have attended this particular high school include three Nobel Prize-winning alumnae and well-known gorilla researcher Dian Fossey.


Lowell High School has 2,720 students and a student-teacher ratio of 22:1.


According to their state test results, eighty-eight percent of students are at least proficient in math and ninety-four percent in reading.


The school belongs to the San Francisco Unified School District and you can find that the school offers advanced-placement coursework that includes calculus, chemistry, and economics.


The average SAT score Lowell students achieve is 1330 and the average ACT test score is 30 - according to 983 respondents for the SAT and 283 respondents for the ACT.

#6. Lynbrook High School


Located in San Jose, Lynbrook High School has 1,747 students and a student-teacher ratio of 24:1. The school belongs to the Fremont Union High School District.


Ninety-one percent of students are at least proficient in math and ninety-three percent for reading. Average SAT scores at 1440 and ACT at 32 - results are based on 658 responses for the SAT exam and 304 for the ACT exam.

Students that are actively enrolled in advance-placement courses are at forty-six percent.

#7. Los Gatos High School


Los Gatos High School has 1,998 students with a student-teacher ratio of 21 to 1. The high school belongs to the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District.


Sixty-six percent of students are at least proficient in math and eighty-one percent in reading.


Students attending Los Gatos High School have an average SAT score of 1320 and an average ACT score of 30, according to 389 respondents for the SAT and 181 respondents for the ACT test.


Advance-placement classes are at forty-percent for Los Gatos High School.

#8. Amador High School


In Pleasanton, we have Amador High School that belongs to the Pleasanton Unified School District.


It has 2,648 students with a student-teacher ratio of 24 to 1.


In correspondence to their state test results, seventy-five percent of students are at least proficient in math and ninety percent in reading.

Students that are taking AP classes at this high school are at forty percent.


High school students at Amador High School score an average SAT score of 1350 and an average ACT score of 30. These numbers are based on 734 responses for the SAT and 371 for the ACT.

#9. Burlingame High School


Burlingame High School is located in the city of Burlingame. The high school belongs to the San Mateo Union High School District.


The high school enrolls 2,648 students with a student-teacher ratio of 24 to 1.


With their state test results, sixty-two percent of students are at least proficient in math and eighty-eight percent in reading.


The median SAT examination results for students at Burlingame High School is at 1300 and for the ACT college entrance exam, 29. These numbers are taken from 321 respondents for the SAT and 159 for the ACT.

#10. Redwood High School


Last but not least of the Bay Area's top 10 high schools is Redwood High School, located in Larkspur, CA.


There are 1,809 Redwood students and an 18:1 student-teacher ratio. Sixty-six percent of students are at least proficient in math and eighty-one percent in reading, based off of Redwood High School's state test results.


The school belongs to the Tamalpais Union High School District.


Students taking the SAT examination score, on average, a 1300 and a 29 for the ACT test. These statistics are taken from 358 responses for the SAT test and 233 for the ACT.
